How to Create a Surface from Polyline in Civil 3D 2022
To create a surface from polylines in Civil 3D, follow these steps:
Step 1: Prepare Your Drawing
- Open Civil 3D 2022 and import or open the drawing file containing the polylines.
- Make sure your polylines represent the surface contours and have elevation values assigned.
Step 2: Assign Elevations to Polylines (If Not Already
Assigned)
- Select a polyline that represents a contour line.
- Right-click and select Properties.
- In the Properties palette, go to the geometry section and set the Elevation value.
- Repeat this process for all polylines with their respective elevation values.
Step 3: Create a New Surface
- Go to the Prospector tab in the Toolspace.
- Right-click on Surfaces and select “Create Surface...”.
- In the Create Surface dialog box:
- Enter
a Surface Name (e.g., “Polyline Surface”).
- Select
the Surface Style (e.g., Contours 1m and 5m).
- Click
OK.
Step 4: Adding Polylines to the Surface
- Expand the Surface Name (e.g., “Polyline Surface”) under Surfaces in the Prospector tab.
- Right-click on “Definition” and select “Breaklines”.
- In the Add Breaklines dialog box:
- Enter a Description (e.g., “Polylines”).
- Set the Type to Standard.
- Click OK.
- Select the Polylines you want to add to the surface.
- Press Enter to finish the selection.
Step 5: Rebuild the Surface
- Right-click on the Surface Name (e.g., “Polyline Surface”) under Surfaces in the Prospector tab.
- Click on “Rebuild” to update the surface with the added polylines.
Step 6: Viewing the Surface
- Right-click on the Surface and select “Surface Properties”.
- Change the Surface Style if needed (e.g., Contours 1m and 5m, Triangles).
- Click Apply and OK.
- Your surface from polylines is now displayed in the drawing.
Tips:
- Make
sure all polylines have elevation values assigned before creating
the surface.
- You
can also add polylines as Contours instead of Breaklines if they
are meant to represent elevation data directly.
- To
improve surface quality, add more breaklines and boundaries if
needed.
